Old Harry Rocks
Old Harry Rocks are one of the most iconic landmarks on the Jurassic Coast and a must visit during stays at your Wimborne holiday home. The impressive chalk sea stacks are located at Handfast Point in between Swanage and Poole and can be accessed via a scenic walk or bike ride from Studland’s South Beach car park (National Trust members park free).
The best option is to follow the 3.5 circular coastal trail from South Beach in Studland. The walk is well-marked and relatively easy, though you do pass close to the cliff edge, so it’s recommended to eye on younger members of the family and dogs under close control.
Along the way you’ll pass through pretty woodland and open fields, before emerging onto the clifftop, where you’ll see Old Harry Rocks in all their glory! Spend some time admiring the scenery and soaking up the far-reaching views along the coastline and out to sea. On a clear day it’s possible to see The Needle on the Isle of Wight. Geologists think the two were once linked by a series of chalk hills in the last Ice Age!
Old Harry Rocks are steeped in folklore. Local legend says the rock formation was named after the infamous pirate, Harry Paye who hid behind the rocks awaiting unsuspecting sailors as they rounded the headland.
Food and drink
You’ll be pleased to hear there are some excellent cafes and restaurants within easy reach of Old Harry Rocks. The Bankes Arms is traditional country pub serving up a tasty selection of food and drink. If the weather’s nice make sure you visit the spacious beer garden. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and wonderful sea views! On cooler days head inside and sit by the roaring open fire.
The Pig on the Beach is an excellent alternative. This up market restaurant specialises in creating flavoursome dishes from home grown and locally sourced ingredients. It can be tricky to get a table, so we recommend booking in advance.
Alternative ways to see Old Harry Rocks
If you’d prefer to admire Old Harry Rocks from the sea, it’s possible to board a sightseeing boat trip from Poole Quay. Alternatively, you can embark on a guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard tour from Middle Beach.
